“SAND IN YOUR SHOES”
DE

Some say: Anyone who has african sand in their shoes will never lose it completely. Meaning: Who was there once, returns again and again.
Today I want to tell you about one of the most stunning and best trips in my life: About amazing sunsets, exciting safaris and a beautiful, unspoilt country. Namibia is almost three times the size of Germany, with just over 2 million residents in the southern part of Africa.
In the following lines I will show you the stations of my journey, tell you about the hotels we visited and give you some important tips for your own trip to Namibia.
VORBEREITUNG & PLANUNG
DE
Was soll in den Koffer?
PREPARATION & PLANING
ENG
When we started planning the journey it became clear that a round trip through Namibia not as easy to plan as a city trip to Barcelona. Each station and each longer ride must be planned in advance and often the communication with the individual lodges is from Germany not exactly easy. Our salvation was the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB). The NTB has planned a great tour for us and made contact with the various lodges and hotels. The help from the NTB is absolutely outstanding and they can give very useful tips. Without this professional and super friendly help, our trip would have been impossible.
What to put in your bag?
In addition to the vaccinations a good first aid kit is essential. You should also pack a thin jacket or a pair of sweaters in addition to the stylish safari clothes, because at night it can be really cold in the wilderness, believe me ;).

STATION 1: WINDHOEK
DE
ENG
After a long but pleasant flight with Condor, we landed in the capital of Namibia: Windhoek. Who expects a vibrant metropolis will be disappointed. Compared to European standards Windhoek is more of a sleepy small town and to explore the center one day is defineately enough.
HOTEL HEINITZBURG
The hotel of choice is clearly the Heinitzburg! Overlooking the city, the house stands defiantly on a mountain and is really outstanding due to its fantastic location, great rooms and wonderful service.
I would recommend to take a one day break in Windhoek after the long flight, just to relax a bit.
STATION 2: OKONJIMA
DE
ENG
On the second day we left the city towards the north and started our road trip. With our Toyota SUV from DERTOUR on the highway and later on gravel and sand paths, we went to Okonjima, more precisely to the Africat Foundation. This place was the absolute highlight of our trip. Inside a huge area cheetahs, leopards, lions, giraffes, zebras and many more are living together. The lodge organizes daily trips to the animals and each is worth it! We opted for a Cheetah and Leopard Safari and did not regret it. The guides know their work and with a little luck you see cheetahs on the hunt or a leopard just warming up in the morning sun. It is even possible to leave the safari car and visit the Wildcats to foot – thrills included! Never in my life have I experienced wild animals so close and unfiltered. To stand face to face with a wild cheetah, is an experience that you will never forget.
AFRICAT FOUNDATION
DE
ENG
The Africat Foundation itself is a non-profit organization and the Lodge visitors thus contribute to the conservation and expansion of a safe habitat for the wild animals. My recommendation is a View Room in the Plains Camp. There you have huge windows, and you are able to observe animals directly from your room – this is better than cinema ;). Overall, we were 2 nights in the Africat Foundation and are still completely thrilled!
STATION 3: ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
DE
ENG
From Okonjima we now drove about 4 hours to one of the biggest attractions in Namibia. The Etosha National Park has everything you can imagine with regard to animals and is about as big as Switzerland. In your own car, it feels good to drive through the beautiful national park and especially in the afternoon you can see at the waterholes huge herds of elephants that come along (with giraffes and zebra) to drink. Seeing these rare animals up close in their natural habitat has really impressed us! Is there anything more beautiful than a baby elephant playing around with his parents ?!
MOKUTI ETOSHA LODGE
DE
ENG
Our hotel, the Mokuti Etosha Lodge, was right next to the National Park, so that one could go to the park at any time. After sunset, we have made ourselves comfortable in the hotel, and I have made much use from the fantastic spa offers. With its beautiful pool oasis, the Mokuti Etosha Lodge was a very good retreat to recover from the safaris and recharge your batteries to tackle the upcoming adventures!
Overall, we stayed there for 3 nights.
STATION 4: ERONGO, DAMARALAND
DE
ENG
After we saw so many animals at our last stop, we wanted to explore more of the nature of Namibia and the Namibia Tourism Board advised us to spend 2 nights in the Erongo Mountains, which are located in the region of Damarland. There were plenty of activities in and around Erongo so we took walks on the mountains and visited a tribe of Bushmen. Especially the visit of the San Life Museum was very impressive and I think every culture has earned it to be preserved in such a beautiful and dignified way. It was really funny to hear from the locals that the Bushmen are a real attraction for people of Namibia as well.
ERONGO WILDERNESS LODGE
DE
ENG
Even the arrival at our hotel, the Erongo Wilderness Lodge, is worth the trip! One drives up a huge rock high and there is real offroad feeling to experince. What you can see after the offroad ride is just as extraordinary as stunning. Located in the mountains, there are huge and especially luxury tents, which offer a magnificent views of the Erongo Mountains. The lodge was fantastically cozy and we instantly fell in love into our tent.
STATION 5 : SWAKOPMUND
DE
ENG
After 2 days in Erongo we headed to our final destination: Swakopmund. In Namibia they call the city “little Germany”, since there the traces of the German colonial era are particularly present. The town itself is very small and idyllically situated right on the sea. What’s special about that? The Namib Desert is directly on the other side and there are spots where the dunes end right in the ocean.
To explore the desert, we did a Quad-Tour through the dunes and raced over 2 hours through the sands. I would highly recommend the quad tour, as you can experience the desert first hand. On the way back I recommend a short stop at Walvis Bay, where you can observe countless flamingos sunbathing!
In addition to the desert we were especially interested in the uninhabited and harsh Skeleton Coast. After a 3 hour drive we reached the door to an unreal world. Away from mass tourism you can explore shipwrecks and walefish bones on the deserted coastline. The Skeleton Coast was really unique and I doubt that you can experience this anywhere else in the world. On the way back we have a made a short stop at Cape Cross to visit the seal colony. This attraction however, I would only recommend to people who are not so sensitive to smell, as the seals really smell bad! :D
STRANDHOTEL SWAKOPMUND
DE

The Sundowners we have taken on the terrace of our beautiful Strandhotel Swakopmund. Newly opened, and with all the facilities and 3 restaurants equipped, you really do not miss any luxury in this hotel. Staying here was really a great ending to our adventure.
HOMECOMING
DE

To come home after such a unique journey is certainly always extremely difficult. For me and my boyfriend it was one of the best trips of our lives. Now, as we have sand in our shoes we will come back in any case! If you like, take a look at my short video in which I have summarized a few impressions of the trip.
A huge thank you goes out to the people and organizations who made this trip possible. The biggest goes to the Namibia Tourism Board, which has helped us (I can only recommend before starting a trip to Namibia to contact the NTB). Further thanks go to Condor, who brought us safe and well to Namibia and the many people who accompanied us in the lodges, parks and on our way through this unique country.
I hope you had fun following me on Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook or here on my blog on the journey and that you are also looking forward for the next big adventure!
